Different Homes, Different Locks
03/28/2014 Back To BlogIs it time for lock replacement? Going to the hardware store and choose what looks good on the shelf won't do you any good. Calling up your friends to ask them about their locks may not be useful at all. It might even get you more confused about which locks to choose and this is certainly a very difficult decision. Your prime concern should be to consider your own needs, lifestyle, neighborhood and other personal matters before you buy security door locks. If you want to keep a secure home, consider the requirements of your own entry points.
Choose bolts based on your needs
Definitely living in a downtown apartment, in a peaceful suburb or in a remote area just out of town are three completely different settings. On the other hand, even friendly neighborhoods can be disturbed by home intrusions and that's why it is essential that your house is well secured regardless of its location. So, the first step is to check your entrances and the condition of all windows and doors. The material of each window frame, for example, would require a different bolt and this is the way you should also choose a door lockset.
Remember that damaged frames, doors and hinges must be replaced. What's the use of lock installation when the entry point is not resistant due to wear?! Glass sliding doors may also need reinforcement and the garage door might need repairs. Once these problems are solved, you need to decide about bolts. It's important to reinforce security at weak points of the house, such as the back or side part where it's dark, at the back and front door and on the ground floor windows.
There are options between traditional bolts and keyless electronic systems operated with codes or fingertips. You can also get a patented key, which cannot be copied by anyone. If lost, lock rekey will be needed, the locksmith will erase the data of your key from its records and you will have a brand new key. If you have little children, it's good to invest in keyless systems to prevent them from opening the door and exit your house without your permission. In any case, think about the needs of your family but make sure the locks are replaced frequently and don't underestimate the incredible value of lock repair either.
